Going to Akihabara and Getting a Japanese Phone in Harajuku (Hindsight is 20/20)

So, as we came to the close of our culture course at KCP, a 3 month class offered for one time credit, our final trip was to Akihabara (or Akiba)! I was really looking forward to this trip, and we managed to see a lot of things! I would later venture here on an assignment from Danny Choo. More on that in a future post.

We got up EARLY, a regular requirement of the course, to attend our very fun lecture on the culture of Anime and Industry in Akihabara. It was very entertaining and we even watched a portion of Evangelion as part of the lecture! This also happened to be on my birthday, which is December 20th.

As part of the tour, we went to the heart of Akiba, and then to a temple nearby. The video encapsulates the day, so I’d really love it if you give it a watch!

I had planned on transferring to a school in Tokyo to finish the duration of my degree, but like all my plans, they rarely go AS PLANNED. I ended up paying for a phone I no longer use. Students, I highly recommend investing in some pocket wifi before you head overseas so you can use your phone. As well as knowing 100% if you will be remaining there. If not, getting a phone is very costly. Follow your intuition and heart and don’t get talked into getting a phone you can’t afford. I know I did. Hindsight is always 20/20 eh? Things don’t always work out when you travel, or study abroad and that’s ok! Part of being flexible and able to adapt is being able to roll with the punches, unexpected expenses, and adjusting accordingly!

If you have any thoughts or questions about my experience, as always, feel free to leave a comment! I’m very visual, so I like to let photos and videos speak for themselves!

Be Brave,
